The true icon owes its origin to the eikon archeiropoeitos - the 'image made without hands', but the development of the visual appearance of the icon also owes much to other early works - the influence of the Fayum coffin portraits is unarguable. Unlike the archeiropoeitos, the Fayum portraits may still be seen today and so provide a reference we can see.Pompeiian wall paintings, Greek and Roman mosaics provide further evidence of styles assimilated into the archetypal icon as we know it today.
